Gelatin silver print: 40 x 30 inches
Cars jockey for position in the early stages of the Monaco Grand Prix. Roy Salvadori (18) leads the pack in his Cooper Climax 12 after Tony Brooks had qualified in pole position but both were forced to retire. Only six drivers finished the race, including Britain's Peter Collins (3rd) and Cliff Allison (6th).
Each print is John Jones Framed.
SM: I scored three Formula One victories at Monaco. My best race was in 1961. The race consisted of 100 laps and if I'd done them all at the same speed I went to get pole position, I would only have been 40 seconds quicker overall... Getting through the tunnel without backing off was the difficult bit; it's a long curve, longer than it looks on the TV, and you can't see the apex until you're quite far in.
The race lasted for more than three hours and it could be very hot. One year I took all the panels off my car to let the air circulate through it. Back then all the kerbs at Monaco were painted white. You could tell who was really quick because they would come back in and the side walls of their tyres would be white from glancing the kerbs. And you'd think, ‘well, he was really getting a move on'.
You could place the car with incredible accuracy. In a good car like the Maserati 250F I wouldn't expect my lap time during 20 laps of testing to vary by any more than a fifth of a second during the whole lot. When you are on the limit, there is only one place you can be (on the track). If you're right on it, then you automatically go to the same place. It's actually a lot easier to do that than it is to go two seconds slower.
